Printed in the USA, sewn in Honduras: what that actually means

Plenty of shops in this category put “Made in the USA” on the banner. In most cases what they mean is that the printing happened in the United States. Those are two different claims, and the difference is not academic.

The two facts

The blank garment is made in Honduras. The Comfort Colors® 1717 is cut, sewn and dyed before it ever reaches a print shop.

The printing happens in the United States. After you order, a blank is pulled in the color and size you chose, the design is printed, and it ships domestically.

So the shirt is printed here and sewn elsewhere. We write it that way on every page.

Why we avoid “Made in USA”

The Federal Trade Commission has a specific standard for that phrase: a product advertised as Made in USA must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. A garment cut and sewn in Honduras does not meet it, regardless of where the ink was applied.

This is not a technicality that only lawyers care about. Origin claims are among the categories the FTC enforces most actively, and for a merchant it is the kind of claim that costs an account rather than a listing.

What domestic printing does get you

Two concrete things, both of which show up in your order:

  • No customs step. Your package does not cross a border, so there is no import duty and nothing to pay on delivery. If anyone ever contacts you asking for a fee to release a Modaven package, it is not from us.
  • Shorter transit. 7–9 business days rather than the two to four weeks that an overseas route usually takes.

Where returns go

To Phoenix, Arizona. You will never be asked to ship a return overseas, which is worth checking on any shop selling printed apparel — a return address on another continent is the practical difference between a returns policy that exists and one that works.

Why we bother spelling this out

Because the alternative is letting you assume something that is not true, and then hoping you never check. A shop that is straight about where a shirt is sewn is easier to trust on the things you cannot check, like whether the cotton weight is what the page says.

The full detail sits on our about page and in the shipping policy.
